Do Superpowers Exist?
Do you believe that some people have some kind of superpowers? I’m not sure if I do but last week, I witnessed something that made me have second thoughts about it! My sister, my nephew and I went to a craft fair. My sister was asking a traffic officer about directions when a man came and said to her; "زوّريه" pointing at Yusuf, my nephew. It means to take him to visit a saint's tomb.
Egyptians, either Muslims or Christians, customarily visit saints’ tombs as some of them, not all, consider these saints as an intermediary between them and God. They ask them to send their wishes and appeals to God. They might want to find a job, to have children, or to recover from a physical or a mental illness. They go to pray there and donate some money or give away some baked products.
The man explained that her baby had been envied! Muslims believe in envy as the action of desiring to have what the others have, instead of them. They see it as a disease in disguise that can be cured by visiting these sacred places.
Then, he continued saying; "May God guide your uncle". She asked him; “Which one?”. He replied; "Mohamed". Yes, I have an uncle who is called Mohamed. A few years ago, he got involved in some troubles with bad people and he’s still paying the price.
This wasn’t the end of the man's speech since he continued; "Your mother is sick". We know my mother is not fine at least mentally. Recently, she complains a lot that her body is tired. She keeps falling over outdoors; the last time was on her back on the stairs. Whenever I tell her she should go check with a doctor, she just explodes at me. Finally, he turned his eyes to me and said to my sister while patting my head; "Your sister will get married"!
I thought he knew all of this because he knew someone in our family but my sister said; “No, he’s just “baraka” which means a blessed man.
I remember when Yusuf was newly born, he used to smile while looking nowhere. When I asked about that, I was told that angels play with babies, make them smile and they guard them.
Some people say that children are able to foretell some future incidents.
My cousin recounted once that her young son once told his granny that she was going to die soon. She was sick but the cause was unknown until she was diagnosed with breast cancer afterwards. After a short period of time, she passed away.
Another story was when my sister was pregnant. She asked the child of her brother-in-law whether he wished to her to have a boy or a girl. He said; “No, it’s a boy and he will be called Yusuf”. Yes, at that time, she knew she had conceived a boy but she had told no one fearing “envy”. Most families prefer to have a boy to a girl. As well as that, her partner and she had chosen Yusuf as a name but they had told no one about that before.
It’s striking how these cute creatures who have the protection of angels transform into the nasty version of adult humans we are. How malicious their acts are when they’re grown up! The more they grow up, the further they get from angels and the more evil they became!
